EVERYONE FEELS VALUED & CARED FOR AND HAS OPPORTUNITIES TO DEVELOP

OUR STORY, SO FAR...

Bishop Bewick is one of four Catholic Education Trusts in the Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle. Our Trust’s origins are modest, a small,  3 school multi-academy Trust (Sacred Heart Partnership of schools), which under the direction of the Diocese in 2020 expanded rapidly over the course of two (Covid) years.

Now complete, our 39 school Trust includes the merger with the former Paxi Christi Trust [St Benet Biscop Catholic Academy and Ss Peter & Paul’s Primary], a further 3 High Schools [St. Mary’s, St. Cuthbert’s and St. Thomas More], 32 Primary schools and 2 First schools. The schools span three Local Authorities (Northumberland, North Tyneside & Newcastle), stretching from the Tyne to the Tweed. Schools joined the Trust in four waves, making it by the summer of 2022 one of the largest in the country. BBCET has over 1,900 employees who are passionate about the education of over 14,000 pupils.

The Trust prides itself on a school improvement model driven by the excellent practice within its own schools, a true ‘by-schools, for schools’ model. The Trust has its own leadership and curriculum group lead by experts in their fields. Outcomes for pupils across are schools are some of the best in the region. Ofsted have rated almost all of our schools Good or Outstanding since 2020, and we anticipate all schools reaching this standard by 2026.

Our schools are led by its Chief Executive, Mrs Anita Bath who has a strong track record in raising achievement and school improvement. She is the former Headteacher of Sacred Heart Catholic High School, a Newcastle Girls’ school which has a long and well-deserved reputation for social mobility and academic excellence.

BISHOP JOHN WILLIAM BEWICK

John William Bewick was born 20 April 1824, in Ministeracres, as the son of a Northumberland gamekeeper.

Bishop Bewick was ordained to the priesthood on 27 May 1850.

He was appointed as Bishop of the Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle on 25 September 1882.

His consecration to the Episcopate took place on 18 October 1882.  The principal consecrator was Cardinal Henry Edward Manning, Archbishop of Westminster.

He was the third Bishop of Hexham and Newcastle.

Bishop Bewick died in office in Tynemouth on 29 October 1886, aged 62.

He was buried at Ashburton Cemetery, Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne.

OUR CREST

Our Crest is based upon the original Bishop Bewick Coat of Arms.  At the top of our crest is the Bishop’s Mitre a reminder of our namesake Bishop Bewick, one of the first four Bishops in our region.

Above the shield rests St Cuthbert’s cross, a symbol of our Diocesan Saint. He spent much time among the people, ministering to their spiritual needs, carrying out missionary work, devoted to this region as we are committed to our children and their families.

On the shield we have three bears, each bear representing one of our regions.  Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland.  Traditionally, bears represent strength, protection, wisdom and  courage which reflect our Trust’s key mission, that we are stronger when we work together.  We will support all our schools, recognising that we all have times of need.  We will harness our collective wisdom for the benefit of all.  We will approach our transformative work with courage together.

OUR PRAYER

Almighty God,

May Christ be at the centre and the root of everything we do.

May all of us know our worth and use it to serve our communities.

May the uniqueness of each person be encouraged so that we discover and reach our full potential.

May our ethos and spirituality be built on Gospel values.

May our schools be places of discovery, learning, belonging and love.

May we be instruments and vessels of the living God.

May God be our source, our anchor and our guide.

In Jesus' name, we pray.

Amen
